“ | Shellbeats are naturally shy and like to keep hidden away in their shells. When they are woken up by their neighbors' loud singing they tend to loosen up, come out of their shell, and play along as best they can with their aquatic drum set. Shellbeats have gotten pretty good at playing lately. | ” |

Description[]
Shellbeat is a Quad-Element Monster that can be found on Water Island. It was added on October 10th, 2012 during Version 1.0.3. It is best obtained by breeding Spunge and Noggin. By default, its breeding time is 24 hours long. Shellbeat has a decent Coin production, and can be useful for beginners before getting Monsters with higher Coin production.
Song[]
Audio sample:
Instrument: Acoustic drum kit
Shellbeat's contribution to an island's song is a collection of mid-to-high pitched percussion sounds. In addition to its drumset and cymbals, Shellbeat also uses its own shell as a drum. It plays on the drumset using the sticks in its hand while playing its shell with its tail. Its shell plays the role of producing the bass drum of a drumset.
VSTs[]
Virtual Studio Technology is an audio plugin software that has libraries of sound effects and synthesized instruments. Within these libraries are SoundFonts, which are the individual effects and instruments themselves. The Monster-Handlers utilize several VSTs to create the sounds of instrumental and sometimes vocal Monsters.

Breeding[]
Shellbeat can be bred using monsters that combine to provide all of the Elements Plant, Air, Water and Earth without repeating any.
The following pairs of Double-Element Monsters can be used to breed a Shellbeat:
However, the combination of a Triple-Element with a Single-Element Monster has a higher rate of success:
- Of these, Spunge+Noggin is the best combination, as failing and breeding a Noggin lets you retry the combo almost instantly.
There is also a small chance of producing a Shellbeat from a failed breeding attempt, using a Shellbeat and a Double Element Monster.
The Rare version of any monster can be used for breeding instead of the common version.
- + Shellbeat and Rare Shellbeat
(Best choice, 100% chance of a Shellbeat if Rare Shellbeat is unavailable)
Likes[]
Every Monster has different things that they like. For every unique object that they like that's placed near the Monster, the Monster's happiness will increase by 25%. Placing more than one of the same liked item near a Monster won't increase its happiness by an additional amount. If there's a Unity Tree on the Island, items don't need to be near the Monster. Below are the things liked by Shellbeat:
- Noggin (requires level 1)
- Yum Yum Tree (level 18)
- Puffle Tree (level 14)
- Dragon Tower (level 20) ()

Statistics[]
Earning Rate and Maximum Income[]
Earning rate is in Coins per minute and depends on Happiness % (Likes increase Happiness) and Monster Level. Each Monster also has a maximum amount of income it can hold at a time. Increasing the Monster's Level also increases this limit.
Feeding Monsters[]
Each Monster needs to be fed four times before it reaches the next level. Increasing the Monster's level increases the Coins earned per minute, as well as the maximum Coins earned.

More info can be found in the Feeding article.
Egg Consumption[]
While trying to breed other Monsters (particularly Monsters with a very low chance of breeding), the following Wublins, Celestials, and Vessels can be used to "dispose of" Shellbeat eggs immediately instead of putting them into a Nursery and having that Nursery not be available. Note that doing this for Rare Wublins will cause the Wublin to stop producing currency and the eggs will not expire.

Note that Monster eggs can only be "disposed of" before awakening Wublins, Celestials, and Vessels; afterwards those Monsters will not accept any eggs. Also note that Monsters to which you have already disposed the number of Shellbeat eggs that it accepts, will no longer be available as a "recycle bin" for such eggs. Kayna's Vessel has no time limit, and its egg inventory cannot be reset. Awakened Celestials only accept eggs during their corresponding Celestial month.

Notes[]
- Shellbeat is a portmanteau of shell and beat, because of the monster's mollusk-like shell and the fact that it plays the drums.
- According to a tweet by the Monster-Handlers, Shellbeat uses a process called 'Tidalkenesis' to emit energy through the fins on its head, allowing it to move its kit where it needs it to be. However, it cannot do the same with other objects.
- Shellbeat looks similar to H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu.
- One of the automatic names a Shellbeat can have is "Thulhu".
- This name is shared by Nebulob.
- Shellbeat also somewhat resembles Doctor Zoidberg, from the animated TV show Futurama.
- One of the automatic names a Shellbeat can have is "Floydberg", while the name "Whynaught" references the "Why not Zoidberg?" meme that came from the show.
- It plays for the entire Water Island song.
- A group of Shellbeats is called an Inkling. This is a reference to what some Splatoon characters are called.
- Shellbeat's central drum is marked with a symbol that represents the Bone Element, nearly identically to the one seen on the Wubbox Stockpile.
- Before the creation of Shellbeat, a different Monster named PongPing was planned to use its elements. This concept was later reworked into a Fire Quad with the same name.
- Shellbeat is the 4th most needed monster to wake up Wublins.
- Shellbeat's "Gene Krabba" costume may be a reference to the late American drummer Gene Krupa.
- Being the Quad-Elemental of Water Island, Shellbeat represents the Water Element most prominently in its appearance.
