— "What's new" description of Rare Monsters |
Rare Monsters are an elusive class of Monsters that are unique variants of regular Monsters that are only available during limited-time promotions. Because they are hard to obtain, they are able to produce more Currency, and take longer to breed and hatch. They share many traits with their Common counterparts, including their song, animation, and breeding combination. However, Rare Wubbox has a unique song and animation, due to the extra difficulty to obtain it.
Since Rares were first discovered on October 10th, 2014, several Monster classes have been given Rares, including Natural, Fire, Ethereal, Seasonal, Magical, Mythical, and Supernatural Monsters. Legendary Monsters, Dipsters, and Celestials are the only other types of Monsters to have no Rare versions.
Breeding[]
- For a list of breeding combinations, see: Breeding Combinations#Rare Monsters
Rares can only be bred or bought if they are available during a special promotion. Almost all Rares have the same breeding combination as their Common counterparts, with the exception of Rare single-element Monsters. They can be bred with two triple-element Monsters that share the same element that the Rare single-element possesses. For example, Rare Mammott can be bred with T-Rox and Clamble , since both triple elements share Rare Mammott's element of Cold. This pattern also applies to Rare single-element Magicals, and Rare Kayna.
Generally, a Rare’s breeding time is the Common’s breeding time multiplied by 1.25, with an extra 30 minutes added onto it. Although there are some exceptions, with Rare Single Elementals being one example.
Breeding with Rares[]
It is important to know that using Rares in Breeding does not help improve breeding chances. So, Rare Entbrat and Rare T-Rox have the same chance to produce a Ghazt as their Common counterparts do. However, Rares do have a different benefit when breeding. When breeding a Rare and its Common counterpart together, you will get that Common guaranteed, which is especially useful when trying to get Monsters to Zap eggs. For example, you can breed Rare Riff and Riff together to get a guaranteed Riff.
StarShop[]
All Rare Natural and Fire Monsters can be bought during special events from the StarShop with Starpower, or bred during a special promotion. Rare Wubbox is always available for purchase from the StarShop on any of the Natural Islands, Fire Haven, the Mirror Islands, or Ethereal Island. Every two weeks, a Rare Trio occurs, which makes three specific Rares available in the StarShop. When a Rare is available in the StarShop, it doesn't necessarily mean that you are able to breed it, unless it is currently available in a different special promotion. The same applies vice-versa.
Amber Island[]
- Main article: Crucible
On Amber Island, Monsters cannot be bred. Instead, Rares are obtained by evolving a common Monster in the Crucible.
Wublin Island[]
- Main article: Wublins#Rare Wublins
On Wublin Island, Monsters cannot be bred. Instead, Rares are obtained by unlocking a Wublin's evolutionary potential with Keys, and then filling in the required Rares in its inventory.

Feeding Monsters[]
- Main article: Feeding
Each Monster needs to be fed four times before it reaches the next level. Increasing the Monster's level increases the coins earned per minute, as well as the maximum coins earned. The food for each level is the same for each Rare Monster as it is for their Common counterpart, e.g. Rare Fwog food per level is the same as the Common Fwog at the same level.
History[]
Rare Monsters were announced on October 6th, 2014 and made their debut four days later for the weekend of October 10th, 2014, beginning with the Rare Furcorn. After the arrival of the first Rare, new Rares released every consecutive weekend through the weekend of January 9th, 2015, except for the weekend of December 26th. After January 9th, 2015, new Rares came every other weekend beginning on January 16th. In between every second weekend, the community could vote on already released Rares to return in Rare Reruns.
On July 6th, 2015, the Rare Single Element Monsters were released and lasted for a whole week until another Rare Single Element Monster took over. These special Monsters introduced a whole new different set of likes and way of breeding -- the way to breed them is to breed two Triple-Element Monsters that share the Rare's one element. For example, the Rare Mammott can be bred with a T-Rox and a Clamble, which both have the Cold Element.
On August 5th, 2015, the last Rare Natural Monster, the Rare Noggin became available. Three months later on November 16th, 2015, Update 1.3.6 launched, making Rares no longer limited and relocating them in the Rares section in the StarShop. The Rare Wubbox also became available in the update but only on Plant Island during its initial release.
Rares of various other classes of Monsters have since released. Rarethereals first released on April 22nd, 2016, starting with Rare Ghazt; Rare Seasonals on July 16th, 2016 with Rare Hoola; Rare Fire Monsters on May 24th, 2019 with Rare Stogg; Rare Magicals on February 24th, 2021 with Rare Theremind; Rare Mythicals on October 12th, 2022 with Rare G'joob; and Rare Supernaturals (not Rare Wubbox; it already existed) on April 5th, 2023 with Rare Brump, Rare Zynth, Rare Poewk, Rare Thwok, and Rare Dwumrohl.
During Version 1.3.6 in November 2015, the StarShop released. The StarShop added new decorations and the Rare Wubbox to the game. It also made all natural Rares permanently available to purchase with Starpower. On September 1st, 2016, the Natural Rares were no longer always available, and were instead put on a rotational basis. These started with Rare Duets on October 5th, 2016. These were later replaced by other promotions like Rare Solos and Rare Trios. In these promotions, Rares were discounted by half for the first 48 hours.
On July 20th, 2022, the Crucible was unlocked, making the Rare Fire Monsters come to Amber Island, starting with Rare Kayna and the Double Elements. The Monster-Handlers have hinted that the technology behind the crucible could potentially be used on other islands lacking Rares, such as Wublin Island.
On April 5th, 2023, the evolutionary potential of Wublins was unlocked, introducing the Rare Wublins. After unlocking an awakened Wublin's Rare inventory with Keys, you can then Zap Rare Monsters to the Wublin. While there is no time limit, the Monster will not sing or produce Currency while partially awakened.

Rares Research[]
- See Also: Rarethereal Crossword
From December 2015 until December 2017, a Rare Monster was selected to be available for 24 hours, and more information about that Rare was revealed from the My Singing Monsters Social Media accounts. Usually this information was already mentioned in the Monster's bio, or was trivial. This was typically done monthly, though sometimes months went by without one or two were done in one month. From May 2016 to April 2017, Rares Research started for Rare Ethereals, and was known as Rarethereal Research. Instead of Rarethereal Research re-releasing a Rare, they accompanied each Rare Ethereal's release and were used to solve the Rarethereal Crossword.
Facts Uncovered:
- November 11th, 2015 - Rare Dandidoo: "This Monster is said to have a the most boundless imagination in all of Monsterdom."
- January 6th, 2016 - Rare Maw: "This Monster uses its horns to tickle its 'prey'... which is typically cupcakes."
- January 20th, 2016 - Rare Entbrat: "This Monster can count all the way to 7. Seriously, this is a big deal for Entbrats."
- March 9th, 2016 - Rare Oaktopus: "Rare Oaktopi experiment with various slimes and oozes to brew potent potions."
- April 6th, 2016 - Rare Mammott: "This Rare playfully taunts other Monsters by using its talent to throw its rumbly voice halfway across an island."
- August 10th, 2016 - Rare Deedge: "The inventive Rare Deedge uses fruit juices and other plant extracts to dye the icy blocks of its special soundboard."
- December 2nd, 2017 - Rare Riff: "The Rare Riff have [sic] a hard time spotting fast moving objects!"
Rare Reruns[]
- For a list of all Reruns, see Breeding Availability
Rare Reruns were promotions that were held between 2015 and 2018. In these promotions, players were able to vote on Facebook between typically two Monsters and the winner would be re-released. These Monsters would then be able to be bred or bought from the Market.
Although most reruns only had two candidates, there were a few that had more. In March 2015, all released Rares were voted on to determine the order of how they’d be released in the Rare Faves promotion. While they were released, Rare Faves was rebranded as a Rare Reprise event. Two different Rares were available each day, with the most popular four made available on the final day. In June 2015, all past Rare Rerun losers ran against each other where the top three were chosen for the weekend. In September 2015, another Rare Rerun Faves promotion was held, but only the top 5 winners were made available.
Although separate in name, the Rare Rumble promotion in May 2017 also had players vote on Facebook between all 30 Natural Rares, and the three top picks were chosen to be available for the weekend.
Rare Reprises[]
- For a list of all Reprises, see Breeding Availability
Rare Reprises were promotions held between 2015 and 2017. Unlike the Rare Rerun promotions that usually re-released one Monster at a time, Reprises released multiple and were not voted on. After 2017, Rares continued to be released in this format, but the 'Reprise' name was dropped.
In March 2015, there was a large Rare Reprise event where two Monsters were released every day for 10 days.

Upcoming Rares[]
There are Rare forms for Naturals, Fire Monsters, Magicals, Wubbox, Wublins, Ethereals, Seasonals, and Mythicals. It has previously been confirmed that Rare forms will not be coming for the Celestials, Dipsters, Shugafam, and Werdos. The Celestials, however, are capable of ascending into Adult Celestials, which work similarly to Rares.
Workshop Ethereals will likely receive Rare forms as Single and Double-Element Ethereals already have Rares.
Of the confirmed Monsters, the following 34 Rare Monsters will be released in the future: 1 Natural Monster, 2 Fire Monsters, 24 Magicals, and 7 Dreamythicals Based on current patterns, new Rare (or Epic) Fire Monsters will release every month with each Amber Island wave.

Notes[]
- Rare Monsters, along with Epic Monsters, are the two Monster Subspecies.
- Compared to their Common counterparts, Rare Monsters have different:
- Likes. Their likes always include their Common counterparts. (Except for Rare Wubbox)
- Coin rates and cost. Rare Monsters earn more coins and cost more than their common counterparts.
- Breeding/hatching times. Rare Monsters take longer to breed/hatch than Common Monsters.
- Egg design. Prior to September 25th 2019, eggs that contained Rare Monsters looked exactly the same as their common counterparts, except that a shimmer, or gleam, effect will appear across the egg from left to right in Breeding structures and Nurseries. This has since changed so that each egg has an entirely unique design along with the special shimmers.
- Before Rare Monsters had their own egg designs, they had the same designs as their common counterparts. The developers intentionally did this to reference The Ugly Duckling.
- Their official reply was:, "Hi there! There is no error - the eggs of Rare Monsters are designed to be the same as their Common counterparts. It's sort of like how the Ugly Duckling's egg looked like the duck eggs... until it hatched. Players will have to pay special attention to breeding and incubation times so that they know when a Rare is on its way!" This was also before Rare Monsters had a shimmer around their eggs.
- Compared to their Common counterparts, Rare Monsters have the same:
- Bed space and size. Rare Monsters require the same bed space and have the same size as their counterparts except for the Rare Wubbox, which requires only one bed.
- Sound/noise, except for the Rare Wubbox. This stays true even if their songs have been altered in the Recording Studio.
- Ability to be Teleported (or not) to other islands (other than The Colossingum, where Rares are unavailable).
- Rare Monsters will count the same as their Common counterparts for the purpose of other Monsters' likes; e.g., if a Monster likes a Furcorn, it will also like a Rare Furcorn.
- Rares can be bred with one another, but no evidence suggests that this offers a higher chance of successfully breeding a Rare. This includes breeding failure. For example, a failed breeding attempt with a Rare Furcorn might produce a regular Furcorn, not a Rare Furcorn. Of course, a Rare Monster cannot be produced using any breeding method if the breeding attempt is made outside the time when that Rare Monster is not available.
- Rares can be bred with their common counterparts. This can be useful in making multiple Rares of the same type. Obviously, to do this, one of those Rares must already be owned. For example, an Entbrat can be bred with a Rare Entbrat and produce another Entbrat. (It would be possible to breed a Rare Entbrat with this method as well, but only when the Rare Entbrat is being offered). With Rare Ethereal Monsters, this sort of breeding can only be done on Ethereal Island. For example, a Ghazt and a Rare Ghazt on Plant Island cannot breed to produce another Ghazt; they can, however, on Ethereal Island.
- For Special Occasions, Rare Monsters were dressed up at the same time as their Common counterparts, but the Rare and Common Monsters were always dressed differently from each other.
- Placing Rare Monsters on Gold Island will be credited toward the breeding Goals with a reward as if they were their common counterparts. For example, if a Thumpies has not yet been introduced to Gold Island, a Rare Thumpies will still work the same and activate the 2,000,000 reward.
- Rares can only be boxed into a Rare Wubbox.
- Rare Monsters from the Plant, Cold, Air, Water, Earth Islands, and Mirror Islands that also live on Shugabush Island can be bought from the Shugabush market during Daily or weekend Deals, bred on their home island and teleported to Shugabush Island, or bred on Shugabush Island by breeding their Common counterpart with the Shugabush. This breeding may result in a Common Natural Monster, a Rare Natural Monster, a Shugabush, or the Shugafam member that results from this breeding pair.
- Since the introduction of Rare Wubbox, which does not have a Natural Element, all Rare Monsters are grouped as "Rare" plus in brackets what their common counterparts would be categorized as. For example, a Rare Furcorn would be categorized as "Rare (Natural)", which a Rare Wubbox would be categorized as "Rare (Supernatural)".
- Rares were not available in the Windows version of the game available through Big Fish Games. However, on the more recent version available through Steam, they are.
- As of 3.2.0, Rare Seasonals are categorized as Seasonals in the Book of Monsters, instead of Rares.
- Most Rares have a maximum earning capacity that is 1.25 times as many coins as their common counterpart.
- As of the 3.3 update, the sell prices for most Rare Monsters are higher than their Common counterparts.
- Rare Viveine is an exception to this, selling for 12 on Amber Island, the same as its Common counterpart.
- In a promotion for Rare Pummel, it also teased the release of Rare Ghazt.
