Plants and sunlight - name a more iconic duo. But what becomes of subterranean vegetation that begins its life cycle deep underground? Rare Gnarls hold the answer. Their garishly coloured leaves and tentacles stand out in the dark, making it easier to locate one another and pair off before seeking a shared host. Host trees are similarly ostentatious, having evolved amber hued foliage to remind themselves of the changing seasons aboveground. Once they have fully matured and fused with an arboreal ally, Rare Gnarls are free to explore the sunlit lands above (or stick around the cavernous depths below, if they so choose). Though the cave-dwelling host trees have developed brittle, papery lenticels encasing their silvery bark, their limbs are no less strong than those hijacked by Rare Gnarls' Common cousins. Plus, they ooze some pretty tasty sap - try it sometime as an energy drink for your workouts!

Likes[]

Every Monster has different things that they like. For every unique object that they like that's placed near the Monster, the Monster's happiness will increase by 25%. Placing more than one of the same liked item near a Monster won't increase its happiness by an additional amount. If there's a Unity Tree on the Island, items don't need to be near the Monster. Below are the things liked by Rare Gnarls:

See the Likes page to view a complete list of all Monsters' likes.

Note: On Amber Island, all of Rare Gnarls's likes are only obtainable for a limited time. Amber Vessels must be revitalized before they count towards Rare Gnarls's happiness.

Notes[]

  • Rare Gnarls is currently the only Rare Quint-Element Monster to be released in a Core Seasonal event, as other Rare Quint-Element Monsters have released during the Aux Seasonal Events associated to their respective Fire/Magical Islands.
  • The line "But what becomes of subterranean vegetation that begins its life cycle deep underground?" in its bio references the bio of Quarrister.
  • While not too similar in color, Rare Gnarls' bio mentions strength and workouts, which are Rare Potbelly's main themes. It also has three heads, rather than the usual two of their Common variants, similar to Rare Potbelly. This continues the pattern of Rare Quints referencing Rare Singles.
  • The eyes on the extra Gnarl are slightly smaller in game than the image in the fan kit.
  • The teal and violet coloration of the parasites, as well as its bio mentioning that the lifestyle of Rare Gnarls directly contrasts that of other plants may suggest that they have undergone umbrasynthesis.
  • Rare Gnarls is the first Monster (not counting the Phosphoran Phlox) to release on a Magical Island and its Mirror counterpart simultaneously.
