With elegantly webbed fingers poised high above its fine clavier, each mighty strike of the keys sends ripples across the Monster World. Virtual Studio Technology (VST) is a plugin format that allows audio software to integrate with digital audio workstations (DAWs). VST plugins come in two main forms: instruments (VSTi), which generate sounds, such as synthesizers and sample libraries, and effects, which process audio, through tools like reverb or distortion. Individual sounds within these plugins may be referred to as patches, presets, samples, or articulations, depending on the plugin. The Monster-Handlers utilize several VST plugins to create the sounds of instrumental and sometimes vocal Monsters. Note that many pages incorrectly label patches as "SoundFonts", an unrelated audio format.
