Islands have a limited amount of physical space, or "grid spaces" to place things like Monsters, Decorations, and Structures. You can visually see this grid by selecting the option "Show Grid" in the bottom left corner, when placing or moving something on an Island. It can be important to see this grid to help plan decorating or Monster farms. Most Islands have an identical grid layout, but some islands have unique layouts detailed in their own sections.
Layout[]
Most Islands share the similar grid space of 785 squares. The Castle, Nursery, and Breeding Structure take up 34 grid spaces in total, leaving a total of 751 placeable squares, and 769 usable ones, if only excluding the immovable Castle. But many islands are exclusions. Those exclusions are listed below:
- 381 Usable squares: Tribal Island
- 497 Usable squares: Wublin Island
- 553 Usable squares: Composer Island
- 564 Usable squares: Celestial Island
- 741 Usable squares: Fire Oasis
- 746 Usable squares: Fire Haven
- 747 Usable squares: Magical Nexus
- 776 Usable squares: The Colossingum
- 788 Usable squares: Psychic Island
You can look on individual pages for the sizes of different Monsters, Decorations, and Structures to help plan your Island. You can also place Paths, which are decorations that can be placed under other objects. Planning is also helpful when placing a large number of small things, like Glowbes or Dipsters.
When looking at the grid, you'll notice that it isn't perfectly symmetrical. If you're planning a symmetrical island design, be sure to avoid these extra squares. Some Islands, like Fire Haven, Psychic Island, and the Mirror Magical Islands, have slightly different layouts because of the way they're drawn, making them even less symmetrical.
There are many tools you can utilize to do your own planning. Vector-based drawing tools like Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw, Diagram tools like Microsoft Visio, Spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel, or even graph paper turned 45 degrees can all be used to help make your own designs. However, one of the quickest and easiest ways to plan a design, is to download the empty grids below, and fill them in with a drawing app with the fill tool or print them out. Most people have gotten by just fine without using a tool or grid to plan their islands. These tools are helpful for people wanting to do a specific design or figuring out how many monsters you need to complete a design - and determining if you have enough beds for them!
Gold Island Planning[]
This section describes strategy as to fit every Monster on Gold Island with a bit of room to spare. There are four 1x1 Monsters (Orange squares), 24 2x2 Monsters plus Shugabush (Blue squares), eight 3x3 Monsters (Green squares) and Wubbox, being 4x4 (Purple squares). The below grid has a place for the Common, Rare, and Epic version of each 1x1, 2x2, and 3x3, as well as a place for the Common, Rare, and Epic Wubbox.Note that due to the large amount of space on Gold Island, there are many different layouts that can be used, which leads to players being able to create their own unique designs.
Tribal Island Planning[]
Tribal Island does not share a Grid with any of the other islands. Tribal Island's Grid is notably smaller than that of most other islands, as there are no outer pedestals/platforms that can be used to place any Monsters.
Because of the nature of Tribal Island, its planning is largely subject to the whim of the Tribe's chief. Of the five inner pedestals, the top-most one is used by Kayna, who cannot be moved. This leaves four other pedestals at varying sizes and heights, which a leader may choose to place their most active members.
Composer Island Planning[]
Composer Island does not share a Grid with any of the other islands. As with other islands, Composer Island's grid is non-symmetrical, with some areas appearing to have extra squares compared to others. Composer Island is pretty limiting in its design, since decorations and paths can not be placed here. However the ability to place Glowbes and multiple Monsters does allow for some creativity.
Celestial Island Planning[]
Celestial Island has a unique grid layout, unlike any other island. Since only a limited amount of each Celestial may be obtained, planning is useful for decorative purposes, rather than maximizing currency.
Magical Nexus Planning[]
Magical Nexus has a unique circular grid layout. This grid layout may be useful for planning for future Rare and Epic Magicals, or just to create a symmetrical design. When planning your island, note that unlike Wublin Island, Monsters appear at a level 1 size, rather than a level 15 size.
