The Hawlo is 'knot' what it appears to be... but just what IS it? No one dares woodchip the chipper wood making up this percussive Monster's disguise to find out. Instead, its peers have chosen to accept Hawlo's perplexing presentation, and simply shake their trunk to the 'berry' delightful rhythm of its stump or admire its talent for pyrogravure.
Monster Bio

Description[]

Hawlo is a Double-Element Magical Monster that is found on Bone Island and Magical Nexus. It was added on April 8th, 2020, during Version 2.3.9. It is best obtained by breeding Kayna and Clackula. By default, its breeding time is 9 hours long. As a Double-Elemental, Hawlo does not have a high Coin production. The Goal for placing your first Hawlo rewards the player with 25,000 Coins and 1 Diamonds.

On Magical Nexus, Hawlo is obtained by Transposing by spending 2,000,000 Coins once fed to level 18. Its Transposing time is 1 day, 3 hours long. Unlike Bone Island, Hawlo does not produce currency on Magical Nexus.

Song[]

Audio Sample:

Instrument: Un-pitched Log Drums

Hawlo hits its stomach to create the sound of an un-pitched log drum.

VSTs[]

Virtual Studio Technology is an audio plugin software that has libraries of sound effects and synthesized instruments. Within these libraries are SoundFonts, which are the individual effects and instruments themselves. The Monster-Handlers utilize several VSTs to create the sounds of instrumental and sometimes vocal Monsters.

Breeding[]

Hawlo can be bred with the elements Fire (Fire Element) and Bone (Bone Element). There is only one breeding combination:

Note that breeding a Double-Element Bone Elemental is not a guaranteed success, as with all other Fire/Magical Double-Elementals.

Hawlo can also be bred in breeding failures. Some combinations that result in a Hawlo in a breeding failure include:

(Best choice, 100% chance of a Hawlo if Rare Hawlo is unavailable)

(Good choice, very small chance of Plinkajou, may result in Epic Clavavera if available.)

Likes[]

Every Monster has different things that they like. For every unique object that they like that's placed near the Monster, the Monster's happiness will increase by 25%. Placing more than one of the same liked item near a Monster won't increase its happiness by an additional amount. If there's a Unity Tree on the Island, items don't need to be near the Monster. Below are the things liked by Hawlo:

See the Likes page to view a complete list of all Monsters' likes.

Monsters Who Like It[]

The following Monster(s) will increase their happiness by 25% when being placed near Hawlo or when Hawlo and a Unity Tree are on the Island. These may or may not also be Hawlo's likes as well:

Earning Rate and Maximum Income[]

Earning rate is in Coins per minute and depends on Happiness % (Likes increase Happiness) and Monster Level. Each Monster also has a maximum amount of income it can hold at a time. Increasing the Monster's Level also increases this limit.

Feeding Monsters[]

Egg Consumption[]

Main article: Zapping

While trying to breed other Monsters (particularly Monsters with a very low chance of breeding), the following Celestials and Vessels can be used to "dispose of" Hawlo eggs immediately, instead of putting them into a Nursery and having that Nursery not be available. Note that doing this for Rare Wublins will cause the Wublin to stop producing currency and the eggs will not expire.

Note that Monster eggs can only be "disposed of" before awakening Celestials and Vessels; afterwards those Monsters will not accept any eggs. Also note that Monsters to which you have already disposed the number of Hawlo eggs that it accepts, will no longer be available as a "recycle bin" for such eggs. Awakened Celestials only accept eggs during their corresponding Celestial month.

Notes[]

  • Hawlo's name is a play on the word "hollow" (referring to how its trunk is hollow). It also may refer to the berries on its head, which appear similarly to hawthorn berries.
    • It, and Hawlo as a whole, may also be a homage to Hollow Knight, the cherries being a nod to the development team, Team Cherry.
  • For the first few hours of its release, Hawlo had a leaf on its head, instead of the berries shown in its official renders and spoken about in its bio.
    • This makes it the first monster whose design was changed after release, with the second being Mammott, the third being G'day, the fourth being Jam Boree, and the fifth being Clavavera.
  • Hawlo is unusual among other monsters in that, despite having plant-based characteristics (a hollow log covering it, and berries on top of that log), it ironically lacks the Plant Element.
    • This is likely because the hollow log that it hides in is not part of its anatomy, but rather something that covers its body. This can be compared to hermit crabs using abandoned mollusk shells to cover the soft part of their bodies, yet the shells are not part of them.
  • While Hawlo's visual design seems to lack any traits relating to both of its elements, its description mentions that it has a talent for pyrogravure, the practice of creating art by decorating wood with burn marks.
  • Although usually being a monster that is not heard and used for background noise, the Bone Island OST heavily bass-boosts Hawlo, making it easier to hear.
  • Episode 5 of Quick Questions with Monster-Handler Tyson confirms that Hawlo has stage fright when playing its sound, so it hides in a hollow log.
