| “ | Another of the mysterious Ethereals, you can never fully tell what kind of mood the Grumpyre is in. Thanks to its shifting eyes and mouth as it gurgles forth its song, it might appear sad when really it's happy, or afraid when it's actually having a blast. This makes sense, since it embodies the essence of Shadow - always a bit obscured, and able to unnerve even the most intrepid of Monsters. | ” |

Description[]
Grumpyre is a Single-Element Ethereal Monster with the Shadow Element. It is first available on Cold Island and can be teleported to either Ethereal Island or The Colossingum once fed to level 15. It is also found on Shadow Islet. Grumpyre was added on August 19th, 2013 during Version 1.1.7. It is best obtained by breeding Deedge and a Triple-Element Monster. By default, its breeding time is 1 day and 12 hours long. Grumpyre has a decent Coin production on Cold Island and is comparable to Deedge. Although useful for beginners, it is recommended to get other Monsters with higher Coin production. The Goal for placing your first Grumpyre rewards the player with 50,000
.
Once teleported to Ethereal Island, Grumpyre takes 10 hours to incubate. You can then breed it with any other Monster to get more. Like all Single-Element Ethereals, Grumpyre has excellent Shard production, bested only by other Single-Element Rare and Epic Monsters. Note that Grumpyre has a slightly lower rate than Reebro, Jeeode, and Humbug.
On Shadow Islet, Grumpyre can be obtained by Dish-Harmonizing a Monster using the Dish-Harmonizer. Its incubation time is 10 hours long. As a Single-Element Ethereal Monster, Grumpyre does not have a high Shard production compared to other Monsters on Shadow Islet.
Song[]
Audio sample:
Voice actor: Christopher Elliott
Grumpyre repeatedly sings "Boom-shika-la-shika, boom-shika-la-shika" in a harsh whispering voice. In the Cold Island song, it plays in the part with Yool and the part with Toe Jammer. On Mirror Cold Island, it plays at the very beginning and stops when Toe Jammer comes in.
On Ethereal Island, it sings "Boom-shika-la, boom-shika-la-la-la-la boom-shika-la, boom-shika-la-la, boom-shika-la, boom-shika-la-la-la-la Boom-shika-la, Boom-shika-la-la." It plays alongside Whisp and Arackulele.
On Shadow Islet, it sings "Boom-shaka-laka-la, boom-shaka-laka-da, shaka-laka-la, la-la-la-la-la-laaa." It’s voice has a delay effect.
On Colossingum, it sings with combination of "La!" and "Boya!".
Breeding[]
Grumpyre can be bred using a combination of a Deedge and one Triple-Element Monster. Possible combination(s):

+ | ![]() Spunge |
![]() Deedge |
+ | ![]() Thumpies |
![]() Deedge |
+ | ![]() Congle |
![]() Deedge |
+ | ![]() Bowgart |
There is roughly a 1% chance of breeding this successfully, but out of all of the combinations shown above, Deedge + Congle is the best combination out of them all, as Congle eggs can be zapped to a Zynth, which is the cheapest Wublin that requires eggs from Cold Island Triples. According to statistics, doing 70 attempts gives you a 50% chance of successfully breeding at least one Grumpyre; and doing 690 attempts gives you a 99.9% chance of successfully breeding at least one Grumpyre. Note that a Rare Monster could substitute any of the parents. The only exceptions are Ethereal Breeding Bonanzas.

Likes[]
Every Monster has different things that they like. For every unique object that they like that's placed near the Monster, the Monster's happiness will increase by 25%. Placing more than one of the same liked item near a Monster won't increase its happiness by an additional amount. If there's a Unity Tree or a Primordial Monster of the same rarity on the Island, items don't need to be near the Monster. Below are the things liked by Grumpyre:

Statistics[]
Earning Rate and Maximum Income[]
Earning rate is in Coins per minute or Shards per hour and depends on Happiness % (Likes increase Happiness) and Monster Level. Each Monster also has a maximum amount of income it can hold at a time. Increasing the Monster's level also increases this limit.
Cold Island[]
Ethereal Island[]
Feeding Monsters[]
Each Monster needs to be fed four times before it reaches the next level. Increasing the Monster's level increases the shards earned per minute, as well as the maximum shards earned.

More info can be found in the Feeding article.
Note: As of version 1.2.0, Single-Element Ethereals can be fed to level 15 on the Natural Islands, at which time they can be teleported to Ethereal Island instead of being placed on Gold Island.

Notes[]
- Grumpyre's name may be a portmanteau of "Grumpy" and "Vampire", due to the ambiguous facial expressions that the Monster makes, and its bat-like traits.
- One of the Breeding combinations for Grumpyre (Thumpies and Deedge) was also the combination for Yool. Big Blue Bubble eventually realized the confusion, and changed Yool's breeding combination on September 13th, 2014, when the Time of the Season event was started during Anniversary Month.
- It was revealed in the version 4.3.0 trailer that Grumpyre is the Monster singing at the start of the loading screen with backgrounds of Mammott.
- Even though there are holes in Grumpyre's wings, it still flies without any problem.
- In the info menu, Grumpyre's eyebrows never emerge, similarly to its pre-1.3.1 appearance.
- Grumpyre is the only Single-Element Ethereal to be a vocalist. This is similar to Noggin being the only Single-Element Natural Monster to not be a vocalist.
- Before the introduction of Ethereal Island, Grumpyre temporarily maxed out at level 10. If you tried to feed past Level 10 beforehand, you would receive a message saying "This Monster is satisfied for now, and will not eat any more food."
- Grumpyre was the first Monster to be based on a real person, being based on Monster-Handler Chris.
- Similarly to Wubbox, Fluoress, and Whaill, Grumpyre's Monster portrait actually shows its early design, rather than its final design.
