“ | Depending on how you look at it, Gnarls are both bigger and smaller than any of the other Quint-Element Monsters. Bigger in the sense that each 'being' is actually comprised of multiple organisms instead of just one; and smaller because the Gnarls themselves are actually quite minuscule! Some might say they are little more than parasitic vines that attach themselves to a tree and coordinate to hijack the plant's latent motor functions. Then it's a simple matter of working together to 'animate' the tree's trunk and branches to give it a full range of motion. Each Gnarl operates the opposite side of the tree, and synchronously conjoin their tendrils to form a 'mouth' through which wind can blow to produce sound. Mercifully, the tree doesn't perceive this transformation as troublesome - instead, it delights in the opportunity to explore the Monster World and make music! Another mercy is that the Plant Top Boss's dual intelligences are satisfied to stick to one tree - no need to 'infect' anyone else. | ” |

Description[]
Gnarls is a Quint-Element Fire Monster that is found on Bone Island and Amber Island. It was added alongside Rare PongPing on April 19th, 2023 during Version 3.9.0. As a Quint-Element Fire Monster on a Magical Island, Gnarls is only available at select times. When available, it is obtained by purchasing in the Market for 500 . By default, its incubation time is 3 days and 8 hours long. As a Quint-Elemental, Gnarls has excellent Coin production on Bone Island, with a high income rate per bed, although it has a lower max income than the Quad-element Monsters. The Goal for placing your first Gnarls rewards the player with 250,000 and 5 .
On Amber Island, Gnarls is only available at select times. When available, it is obtained by purchasing in the Market for 40 as a Vessel, which then can be revitalized by zapping eggs into it. As a Fire Quint-Elemental, Gnarls has a superb relic production.
Song[]
Audio:
Voice actors: Tyson McGavin, Jenn Iannessa, and Charlie Conlon
Gnarls does a choir-like sound, similar to that of Quarrister. On Bone Island, it sings "Nya nya nya Nyaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaah, Nya nya nya nyaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaah, Nya nya nya Nyaaaa-Nyaaaa-Nyaaaa-Nyaaaa-Nyaaaaaaaa-Aaaaaaaah..."
On Amber Island, it sings "Ya ya ya Yaaaaaaaoooooo, Nyaaaaa Aaaaaaaaahhh... Ya ya ya Yaaaaaaaa Nyaa-yaaaaaa-Aaaaaa-Aaaaaahh..." during Flum Ox's verse, as well as during a new verse that was added during its release.
Breeding[]
Unlike in Dawn of Fire, where Gnarls is best bred with Incisaur and Noggin, Gnarls cannot be bred. Instead, it must be purchased from the Market. On Amber Island, it must be purchased as an inactive Vessel and revitalized by zapping eggs.
Likes[]
Every Monster has different things that they like. For every unique object that they like that's placed near the Monster, the Monster's happiness will increase by 25%. Placing more than one of the same liked item near a Monster won't increase its happiness by an additional amount. If there's a Unity Tree on the Island, items don't need to be near the Monster. Below are the things liked by Gnarls:
- Kayna (requires level 9)
- Glowl (level 9) ()
- Tiawa (level 9) ()
- Tring (level 9) (,)
- Ockulo Tree (level 13) ()
- Hammock (level 10) ()
- Striking Bulbs (level 25) (,)
See the Likes page to view a complete list of all Monsters' likes.
Note: On Amber Island, all of Gnarls' likes are only obtainable for a limited time, with the exception of Kayna. Amber Vessels must be revitalized before they count towards Gnarls' happiness.

Revitalizing[]
On Amber Island, Gnarls must be powered up rather than being bred. Unlike Wublins and Celestials, the allotted time to fill a Vessel does not start when the first egg is zapped, but instead are only available to purchase and fill at select times. The inventory must be completed in this time. When a purchased vessel is incomplete after the time, it will disappear and half of the relics spent will be given back. You will also get the option to revive Gnarls by purchasing the missing eggs with Diamonds. Eggs can be zapped from Mirror Islands instead of, or in conjunction with Natural and Magical Islands.

Filling In[]
Like other Monsters on Amber Island, Gnarls can instead be filled in with Diamonds. Each egg can be filled in for 40. Gnarls requires a total of 1,720 for all eggs to be filled.
Since all eggs have an equal Diamond fill cost, it is best to save your Diamonds for the Monsters that are harder to obtain. And oftentimes, it is cheaper to speed up eggs to zap from the Breeding Structure instead.
Wildcards may also be used when filling in a Gnarls's inventory. Similarly, it's best to save them for harder to obtain Monsters.

Statistics[]
Earning Rate and Maximum Income[]
Earning rate is in Coins per minute or Relics per month (28 days) and depends on Happiness % (Likes increase Happiness) and Monster Level. Each Monster also has a maximum amount of income it can hold at a time. Increasing the Monster's Level also increases this limit.
Bone Island[]
Amber Island[]
Though the Relic Rate and Maximum is displayed in-game as a whole number value, internally these are decimal values. Where such values have been empirically found, they are provided in the table. When collecting from Gnarls, you will only receive the whole number value generated.
Feeding Monsters[]
Each Monster needs to be fed four times before it reaches the next level. Increasing the Monster's level increases the Coins earned per minute, as well as the maximum Coins earned.

Notes[]
- Gnarls is the fourth and final Fire Monster to be released in My Singing Monsters before being released in My Singing Monsters: Dawn of Fire. The first is Kayna, the second is Bowhead, and the third is Tuskski.
- Gnarls' name comes from the word "gnarls," a rough, knotty protuberance, especially on a tree.
- Its name may be a reference to American soul duo Gnarls Barkley. This is reflected in the design, as the monster is comprised of two entities, and the body of the tree is, of course, made of bark.
- Gnarls is an example of a colonial organism, a single organism made up of smaller ones with designated purposes.
- Each Gnarl controlling the opposite side of the tree may be a reference to the way each hemisphere of the brain controls the opposite side of the body.
- Gnarls is the last Common Monster to release on Amber Island, making it the last Fire Monster to be added to the game.
- Similarly to the other Quint-Element Monsters, it requires the egg of every Monster with a specific element. In this case, it requires the egg of every Monster with the Plant Element.
- This excludes Potbelly, however.
- Blasoom also requires only Monsters with the Plant Element, but it does not require the other Natural Quads with the Plant Element, Fire Monsters, or Magical Monsters. This is mainly because the Celestials were released in 2018, and the Magical Islands were released in 2019-2021.
- Gnarls was released in the month of April, which is the month of the Growing Green constellation according to Starhenge.
- Its Vessel was teased in a promotional image for the third Amber Reprise, which was behind a Wingaling at the top right corner.
- Upon Gnarls' release, the Amber Island song was extended.
- Gnarls is the first and currently only Monster to be voiced by Monster-Handlers Tyson and Charlie.
- Coincidentally, Gnarls' name rhymes with Charlie's real first name, Charles.
- Gnarls' arms look very similar to Loodvigg's, from how they're connected by the elbow.
- Before incubating, the Plant sigil is over the Earth sigil on Gnarls' vessel. However, once the animation to move the egg to the Nursery starts, they swap places.
- Gnarls' name itself is pronounced “nyarls”, possibly in reference to the way it sings.
- Gnarls is the only Quint to not like or be liked by another Quint.
- If you listen carefully at the end of Gnarls' second Amber Island track, a faint Krillby sound can be heard in the background.
- Every Monster that likes Gnarls has it as its Mystery Like.
- If Gnarls was intended to be breedable on Bone Island, then its best and only breeding combination would be Incisaur and Noggin.
- If Fire Monsters from the Fire Expansion could breed, then Gnarls would also be on Light Island, considering that Light Island has both Tiawa and Potbelly.
- Although Gnarls' bio mentions it technically being the biggest Quint, it is actually tied with Candelavra for the smallest Quint in terms of grid size, at 2x2.
- Gnarls is one of only two Monsters to have both the Plant Element and the Cold Element on Bone Island, the other being Incisaur.
- Gnarls' bio stating that wind passes through its combined mouth breaks the lore on Amber Island.
- It has been stated that wind doesn't blow in the Higher Plane, which is why neither Gold Island's castle nor Amber Island's castle makes a bass sound.
- According to the February 2024 episode of MSM Live, Gnarls eats by 'absorbing' its food.
- Being the Plant Quint, Gnarls represents the Plant Element most predominantly in its appearance.
- Despite this though, Gnarls is not on Plant Island.
- This is mainly due to Plant Island being a Natural Island, and all Natural Islands lack the Fire Element.
- Gnarls is the final Quint-Element Monster to be introduced in Dawn of Fire.
- Gnarls is the first Quint-Element Monster to get a costume.
- Being parasitic creatures, a Gnarl must attach itself to a living thing in order to survive. Gnarls can attach themselves to other Monsters if they so choose, but they refrain from doing so as it would be considered rude.[1]
