Costumes are cosmetic changes for Monsters that can be purchased in The Colossingum or main Islands. Before the introduction of The Colossingum in Version 3.0.0, costumes used to be a limited time appearance change applied to all species of Monster on their native islands during Spooktacle and the Festival of Yay. But since Spooktacle 2021, these types of costumes have been phased out in favor of the new, purchasable ones that stay with your Monsters forever. Costumes are also now available for other seasons, like the Season of Love, Eggs-Travaganza, SummerSong, etc, which didn't have costumes in the original iteration. Before Version 3.0.4, costumes from The Colossingum were not available on other islands.

Costumes can be bought on the main islands with Coins or Diamonds to change a monster's appearance. In Version 3.2.0 onward, they can also be obtained through breeding monsters. Once bought, these costumes will stay permanently unlocked, no matter if they were available during a limited time or not. Monsters wearing Costumes will still keep their costumes when teleported to a different Island. Costumes also have a small chance to appear on any Monster that has been bred, as long as the Costume is available to purchase. Certain boosts increase the chance for a Monster to be bred with a Costume.

Colossingum costumes not only change the appearance of a Monster, but can also give the Monster wearing it a new elemental attack in place of an old attack that the Monster inherently knows, or sometimes a new move altogether in some cases. Although this is not the case with all costumes, some are still just purely for aesthetic pleasure. Some costumes are unavailable to The Colossingum and exclusive to the main Islands, such as costumes owned by Fire Monsters, Magicals, Mythicals, Supernaturals, Dipsters, and Werdos.

During a Seasonal Event, a special set of costumes will be available, and these costumes will be part of their own seasonal series.

Be careful: once you have used a free costume on the Colossingum, you will have to pay currency or earn the costume a second time if you want it on another Monster of the same species. Also note that costumes are only free on the Colossingum. If you unlocked the costume, it will be discounted on all other Islands where applicable.

Costumes have a section in the Book of Monsters on all Islands except Composer Island. Getting a Costume on any Monster adds to your Costume collection, which can be done by purchasing, breeding, or teleporting a Monster with the Costume. On Gold Island, simply placing a Monster wearing the Costume will add it to your collection.

Legacy Costumes

From 2012 to 2020, Monsters only dressed up for the Halloween/Spooktacle and Yay/Christmas seasons. Costumes were applied to all monsters for free and disappeared after the seasonal event was over. The following costumes have yet to become part of the new costume mechanic. It is unknown if these will be seen in future seasons.

Notes

• Since 2017’s Spooktacle until 2019’s Festival of Yay, all monsters that dressed up would dress up immediately on the day the corresponding celebration started.
• Monsters will have their Seasonal Costumes available on all Islands they appear on, even if they don't appear on the island that the celebration itself is centered around.
• On October 30th, 2014, Spunge also put on a costume, dressing up as a vampire. This was the result of a contest in which game players sent in costume ideas, with the winner being used in the game. The drawing became Spunge's Vampiric Veneer costume, which is now used in game.

• Spunge did not change its appearance for the Yay season after 2013, until its costume was made purchasable in 2021.
• Mammott, Epic Mammott, Shrubb, Rare Shrubb, Furcorn, Rare Furcorn, Epic Furcorn, Epic Maw, Bowgart, Rare Bowgart, Epic Bowgart, Spunge, Pummel, Rare Pummel, the Thumpies, the Rare Thumpies, and the Dipsters are the only monsters which have changed their appearances for both Spooktacle and Yay.
• Noggin, Toe Jammer, Kayna, Pango, Oaktopus, Furcorn, Fwog, Drumpler, Maw, Pummel, Thumpies, Rare Thumpies, Scups, PomPom, Ghazt, Jeeode, Tawkerr, Parlsona, and the Dipsters are the only monsters who dress for three or more Seasonal Events.
  • The Dipsters have dressed for the most Seasonal Events in total however, having Costumes for all five Core Seasonal events.
  • If legacy costumes are included, then Shrubb can be counted as well.
• During Spooktacle 2015, some players experienced a glitch in which certain monster's costumes would be jumbled around, along with the Plant island.
• Until October 2015, Ethereal Island was unaffected by Seasonal Events, as it initially had no event of its own, and none of the costumed Natural Monsters could reside there.
• During Spooktacle 2017, there was a glitch on Composer Island that made Reedling's eyes, nose and mouth appear outside of its Smunkin Mask.
  • This same glitch happened when costumes were first made available on Fire Haven. Reedling's eyes and mouth went through its Breath Tweeter and Oni-rous Mask costumes during its playing animation.
• No Natural or Rare Natural Monsters dressed up for Spooktacle or Yay the year of The Colossingum's release.
• In Version 3.2.0, the shop icon for the costumes section contained a disco ball that at the time wasn't revealed. It was later revealed to be the Take Me to Thumpie Town costume for the Thumpies in SummerSong 2021.
• Before Version 3.7.0, some Colossingum costumes in the Steam version had some differences from the mobile version.
  • PomPom's Pom-Mohawk costume has more detail.
  • Congle's Monster Mothma is more saturated, and used to be brighter before version 3.2.0.
  • T-Rox's Guilded Pauldrons has bigger indents, and 2 extra indents.
  • Riff's Spiny Six Strings has a broken horn, an extra small horn, and an ear added on its guitar.
• All Seeing Belly, Growth Spur-ts, Infamous Mug Pot, Pad Hair Day, Bubble Whammy, Parasol-ing, Miner Key, In It To Fin It, Fantasy Wings, Tentacool, Bunny Ears, Drop the Myc, Petal Propeller, and Beach Bum are the only animated costumes.
• Pure Polkagris and O Spungy Tree had their names swapped when first added as permanent costumes during Festival of Yay 2022.
• On release, the basic Ethereal Costumes on Ethereal Island used to cost as much shards as they do coins on other islands, making them ridiculously expensive. However, their buying prices have been significantly reduced.
• Looking closely, the patterns on Entbrat's Brat-wurst costume contain pictures of Decorations, including a Fire Bush and a bulb from a Meldablend.
• In March 2024, there was a glitch where MacE's nose would disappear while playing, but reappears while idling.
• As of Version 4.5.0, the two Monsters that have the most costumes are Furcorn and Mammott, with a total of ten costumes each (not including legacy costumes).
  • If variants are counted, then Furcorn and Thumpies have the most costumes, each with thirteen total costumes across all three variants.
