“ | Some monsters occupy multiple beds. When you need more beds, upgrade the castle. | ” |
Description[]
The Castle is a Structure that allows for Monsters to be placed on an island, and each Castle provides a certain number of beds for monsters. Aside from Magical Nexus, Wublin Island, Celestial Island, Tribal Island, The Colossingum, Composer Island, and Gold Island, each island starts with the same Basic Castle, and the progression through the castles is the same, with the same number of beds for each level of a castle (The number of beds per castle is increased on Ethereal Island and Ethereal Workshop, due to the fact that Ethereal Monsters occupy large numbers of beds.), but the time and cost required and Experience granted for each upgrade differs based on the island. Gold Island has a single castle - the Crystal Castle - which does not have a bed limit, and cannot be upgraded. Composer Island also has a single special castle, and every monster takes up one bed, except the Glowbes, which take up no beds.
There are two mini-games that you can play from the Castle.
Song[]
Instruments: Electric bass (Natural Islands), Bass/Sub-bass synth (Fire Islands, Ethereal Island, and Ethereal Workshop), Baritone synth (Psychic, Bone, Light, Faerie, and Mythical), Synth pad (Sanctum), Acoustic bass/Horn/Trombone/Tuba (Shanty)
Performer: Dave Kerr (Natural Islands)
An upgraded Castle (Modest Castle and up) produces an electric bass sound. No bass sound can be heard on Shugabush Island, Composer Island, Gold Island, or Amber Island though. This does not happen on Shugabush Island, as Shugabass replaces the Castle's musical role. On Fire Haven, Fire Oasis, Psychic Island, Bone Island, Ethereal Island, and Ethereal Workshop, it plays a bass/sub-bass synth. On Light Island and Faerie Island, it plays a baritone synth. On Magical Sanctum, it plays a low tanpura sound. On Seasonal Shanty, it plays brass sounds similar to Sooza in addition to its acoustic bass. On Mythical Island, it plays sounds similar to a low theremin or baritone synth with tremolo.
Without Castles, Magical Nexus, Wublin Island, Celestial Island, and Tribal Island do not have a Castle's bassline. While Shugabush Island and Gold Island do have Castles, they also don't have a Castle's bassline.
VSTs[]
Virtual Studio Technology is an audio plugin software that has libraries of sound effects and synthesized instruments. Within these libraries are SoundFonts, which are the individual effects and instruments themselves. The Monster-Handlers utilize several VSTs to create the sounds of instrumental and sometimes vocal Monsters.
Note that the Natural Island Castles do not use VSTs, as they are all composed by Dave Kerr.

Common Castles[]
In the following table, the number of beds shown is given as the number on all islands except the Ethereal ones, followed by a slash and the number of beds on Ethereal Island, then another slash and the number of beds on Ethereal Workshop. For the Paradise Castle, Mythical Island is an exception in that it has 120 beds.

Crystalline Castles[]
The Crystalline Castles are an additional set of upgrades first added in Version 2.4.1. They were originally only available on the Natural Islands, with Crystalline Castles for the Fire Islands releasing in Version 3.4.0, for the Magical Islands in 3.5.0 on June 29th, 2022, for Ethereal Island and Magical Sanctum in 3.8.1 on January 18th, 2023, and Mythical Island in 4.3.0 on May 29th 2024. These upgrades allow at least one of each native Monster to be on the Island at once, with the maximum bed space at the final upgrade being 180 (780 for Ethereal). The one outlier here is Mythical Island, which has one upgrade level (with 200 beds) in contrast to the three that the other ones have. The design of each Castle is unique, sporting the color and features of the Island, as well as its corresponding crystals. There are three raw crystals visible on the first Crystalline Castle upgrade, with two polished crystals being added on the second, and one carved crystal on the third. Each island’s Crystalline Castle costs 20 more diamonds than the previous Island’s castle. To upgrade the Crystalline Castle further on each Island, it will cost 80 more diamonds than tier 1 for the second tier, and 160 more than that for the third. Shugabush Island, and Seasonal Shanty are the only islands left to have a Paradise Castle but not a Crystalline Castle.

Other Castles[]
Some Islands' Castles cannot be upgraded and are already at maximum, and Amber Island's castle has to be upgraded with relics.
These castles are exclusive to one island each.

“Unsurprisingly, the Castle of Amber Island is bound by the same peculiar physics of the higher plane as Gold Island's Crystal Castle, and arranges itself in the same multi-faceted, crystalline structure as it grows skyward. What is different, of course, is the building material: hardened sap from the multiverse's World Tree, the Stablo Mjehurića, that preserves musical musings in coagulated Relic form. As more Relics are donated to its expansion, more beds become available for the Fire Monsters of Amber Island to take up residence.” |

Castle and Hotel Beds[]
The number of Monsters you can place on the Island depends on how many Beds they take up, and how many Beds are available in the Castle.
A further number of Monsters may be placed in the optional Hotel Structure, with its own limit on number of Beds.
When you attempt to place a Monster from the Nursery Structure onto the Island, but there aren't enough Beds available in the Castle, you may receive one of the following messages:
- If you do not have a Hotel, and...
- your Castle is not fully upgraded: "Your Castle does not have enough Beds. Go to Castle to upgrade now?" This is accompanied with a button that causes the Castle to be selected so you can easily upgrade it.
- your Castle is fully upgraded: "Your Castle is fully upgraded and does not have enough Beds.". This means you will be unable to place the Monster on the Island without either constructing a Hotel first, or removing enough Monsters from the Island to free up the number of Beds required.
- If you do have a Hotel, and it has enough Beds available, and...
- your Castle is not fully upgraded: "Your Castle does not have enough Beds. You can go to the Castle to upgrade it or check in to the Hotel." This provides two buttons: One to go and upgrade your Castle, and the other allowing you to check the Monster straight into the Hotel without the need to place it on the Island first.
- your Castle is fully upgraded: "Your Castle is fully upgraded and does not have enough Beds. Check in to Hotel?", which provides only the button to check the Monster straight into the Hotel.
- If you do have a Hotel, but it does not have enough Beds available, and...
- your Castle is not fully upgraded: "Your Castle does not have enough Beds and your Hotel is full. Go to Castle to upgrade now?", which only lets you go to the Castle to upgrade it.
- your Castle is fully upgraded: "Your fully upgraded Castle does not have enough Beds and your Hotel is full." This means you will be unable to place the Monster on the Island, nor check it into the Hotel, requiring you to remove enough Monsters from the Island to free up the number of Beds required
Note that this game mechanic, introduced in Version 2.4.1, does not provide a button to go upgrade your Hotel, if your Hotel does not have enough Beds available but could be upgraded, nor does it suggest Buying a Hotel if you do not have one (but could buy one, requiring Level 15).
It also does not check if your Island has enough physical space (see Island Grid Planning) for the Monster to be placed, which means that if you have enough Beds on the Island and enough Beds in the Hotel, but there's no free space on the Island to actually fit the Monster, you will not be shown the option to place it in the Hotel instead; you will have to make space on the Island.

Notes[]
- The castles on Shugabush Island, Gold Island, Amber Island, Wublin Island, Magical Nexus and Tribal Island, unlike other islands, do not produce a bass sound due to their absences.
- Shugabush Island's Castle likely doesn't produce a sound because Shugabass already takes on the role of a bass Monster.
- Similarly applies to Wublin Island has Thwok playing the bass role.
- This also applies in Magical Nexus that Gob is basically taking over as the bass instrument.
- The reason for the Castles of Gold Island and Amber Island not producing a bass sound is because wind does not blow in the Higher Plane, which is necessary for a Castle bass sound to be produced.[citation needed]
- The Castle plays throughout the entirety of these islands: Plant, Cold, Water, Mirror Cold, Light, Faerie, Bone, both Ethereal islands, and Sanctum. It used to play thoughout Air Island, until the Werdos were added. However, if you were to mute them, their verses won't play and the Castle would play throughout the song.
- All of the Castle upgrades on Ethereal Island and Ethereal Workshop have more beds than other islands, due to the Ethereal Monsters taking up more beds than usual.
- In fact, when you disregard Gold Island and Composer Island’s castles, Ethereal Island’s fully-upgraded Crystalline Castle has the most beds with a total of 780.
- When it was first introduced, the Extravagant Castle had a maximum of 52 beds. However, with Version 1.1.3, the maximum amount of beds was increased to 60.
- An additional upgrade past the Extravagant Castle had been teased for a while, from a Loading Screen tip reading "The Extravagant Castle is the Maximum Castle. For now." This later led to the release of the Paradise Castle.
- The Paradise Castle was available in the defunct Big Fish Games version, but was never added to the PlayStation®Vita version, despite the aforementioned Loading Screen tip appearing in that version as well.
- The bio of the Crystal Castle was different when Gold Island was first released. It implied that the Crystal Castle is the power source for all Monsters, rather than those of Gold Island specifically. It read: "Although shaped like a castle, this mysterious structure actually serves as the main power generator in the monster dimension of the multiverse! It's from here that monsters derive their musical inspiration, as well as their tireless energy so that they can keep singing forever!"
- The costs for the Extravagant and Paradise Castles on Water and Earth Islands increased after the Anniversary Month Celebration ended in 2014. Instead of each of the Extravagant Castles costing 30 , they now cost 35 in Water Island, and 40 in Earth Island. The Paradise Castles cost 70 and 80 respectively.
- The Magical Island Crystalline Castles confirmed the Magical Islands' association with the Outer Islands inside of Dawn of Fire. Although heavily implied for several years, this was a more formal mentioning of their association.
- Upgrading to a Crystalline Castle presents a warning reading "Warning: Using the maximum number of Beds in the next Castle upgrade may result in some sound and performance issues on older devices. Continue?"
- Prior to Update 2.4.1, Composer Island’s Castle was simply a Paradise Castle.
- The Castle on Psychic Island was the only non-upgraded Castle to play sound. It was confirmed by the Monster-Handlers to be a bug, and was later fixed.
- When it was first released, the Quarritz Castle erroneously referred to Bone Island as "Cave Island." This was quickly fixed.
- The Castle on Plant Island has the longest contribution to a song in the whole game. It plays for a total of 2 minutes and 59 seconds, the entirety of Plant Island's song.
- Amber Island is the only island to have 10 tiers of upgradable Castles, which not only makes it the only island with 10 upgrades, but the most expensive castle in the game costing a total of 440 Relics and 1,800 Diamonds .
- If the Relics used to upgrade the Amber Island Castle are obtained solely with Diamonds, it would cost 23,510 Diamonds to upgrade the Amber Island castle to its final state.
- On Ethereal Workshop, there was originally only the Basic and Modest Castles. In Wave 2, the Comfortable Castle has been added, then there is the Spacious Castle in Wave 4, and afterwards, the Luxurious Castle released in Wave 6. This leaves just the Extravagant Castle, Paradise Castle and possibly the Crystalline Castle.
- On Ethereal Workshop, upgrading the Castle will give more Meebs capacity.
- "As the Castle on Ethereal Workshop is upgraded, the island can accommodate a larger population of Meeb critters." This is stated in the Castle's bio.
- In the fan kit, the Extravagant Castle is misspelled as "Extravagent Castle" instead of "Extravagant Castle".
- There was a bug upon release where when upgrading to the Spacious Castle on Ethereal Workshop, the bass would not play. This has since been fixed.
